Background

Since 2016, Bardavon Health Innovations has partnered with one of America’s largest retail employers. The employer wanted to reduce and prevent outlier cases to improve their workers’ compensation outcomes. To meet the client’s need, Bardavon created Insights Alerts™.

Bardavon Insights Alerts was integrated directly into the employer’s claims management system and gave the employer quick access to the same information that the Bardavon Clinical Quality team uses to proactively mitigate case risk.

After initial positive results, Bardavon commissioned an independent third-party actuarial firm study. That study found Insights Alerts reduces the duration of physical therapy treatment for both non-surgical and surgical cases for closed cases from one large retailer employer over a seven-month period, before and after implementation of the alert system.

Methodology

Cases were normalized for underlying risk factors using Bardavon’s Outlier Prediction Model™, which categorizes cases into low-, medium-, and high-risk categories.

Bardavon’s model—a part of the Bardavon Index™—predicts the likelihood of a case becoming an outlier based on information collected during the initial evaluation. It also includes detailed information about the patient’s demographics, health history, job, and injury.

Pre-implementation case averages were rebalanced to match the mix of cases in these risk categories post-implementation to ensure an equal comparison.

Key Study Findings

  • The duration of both non-surgical and surgical cases was lower post-implementation.
  • The number of visits for both non-surgical and surgical cases were lower post-implementation.
  • The percentage of cases exceeding the duration outlier threshold decreased for both non-surgical and surgical cases.

Conclusion

Bardavon’s methods require close ties between all parties—the employer, the adjuster, the therapy provider, and Bardavon. When Bardavon Insights is fully implemented, the duration of physical therapy treatment is reduced, outlier risk is mitigated, and Workers’ Compensation outcomes are improved.
